16 Lessons in Lines

Foreword

Preface

"16 Lessons
in Lines"

'Baimiao' is a Chinese term for line drawing. It requires representational similtude and is different from pictures depicted in xieyi (free) or abstract style. Hence it is a readily acceptable genre of art to most people.

Generally it is also a prerequisite for students of art choosing painting or sculpture as their discipline. Colour rendering and tonal washes are absent in line drawing. With simple lines as the only elements, the artist can describe pictures of any type.

I like baimiao, so do many collectors and members of the art circle. Baimiao is not a monopoly of the architectural students. Nonetheless, it is surely their favorite medium by means of which they can express their creative ideas. Architectural drawing needs to be easily comprehensive rather than esoteric. For this reason, it is imperative that architectural students must learn the technique of baimiao, frequently practise it and finally use it as a means to convey the design of their imagination.

On the occasion of their Golden Jubilee celebration this year, may I sincerely wish the Department of Architecture all the best and success now and in the days to come. This exhibition shows their world of creativity and the fruitful accomplishments of their endeavour.

I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Prof. Sun-chang Lo and the participating scholars, experts as well as students for their industrious joint efforts in making this exhibition a reality. Such an achievement delights us all and is growing steadily with the fast team spirit.
